When I was a kid, a trip to the mall always meant one thing — Orange Julius. Every time my parents and I went to run errands, Mom and Dad would ask, “Want a smoothie?” And I always did.

But here’s the thing — while the chain’s signature drink was the famous orange smoothie, I wanted none of the orange. I was a banana purist. My go-to order? A banana-strawberry shake — really just a creamy banana smoothie with a hint of strawberry. That’s where my love affair with bananas began… and it’s never stopped.

Even now, bananas are one of my favorite ingredients — and for good reason.


Why Bananas Deserve Their Superstar Status

Bananas aren’t just nostalgic comfort in fruit form — they’re nutritional powerhouses:

  • Rich in Potassium: One medium banana packs around 420 mg of potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure, supports heart health, and aids muscle recovery.
  • Natural Energy Boost: The combo of natural sugars (fructose, glucose, and sucrose) and fiber provides a quick yet steady release of energy — no crash required.

This Banana Date Shake is sweet, creamy, and full of nourishing ingredients. It’s a perfect choice for a breakfast date, snack date, or — my husband’s and my favorite — a walking date: smoothies in hand, a stroll around the neighborhood, and a little time to reconnect.

And yes — it’s also quite literally a Date Shake (there are actual dates in it).


Banana Date Shake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 scoops of your favorite unflavored protein powder (This is my favorite! Easy to digest and simple ingredients)
  • 2 large ripe frozen bananas (the riper, the sweeter!)
  • 6 pitted dates — double-check each date to make sure they’re really pit-free!
  • 2 cups frozen riced cauliflower (adds creaminess + fiber without flavor)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch sea salt (We use Celtic sea salt for everything! It contains lower sodium per serving than regular table salt and is nutrient rich, and gut supporting)
  • 3 cups water (or more for a thinner texture)
  • ¼ cup walnuts
  • 1 tbsp tahini

Instructions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender.
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  3. Pour into glasses and enjoy immediately — preferably on a walk with someone you love.
